How to: Flatter Your Figure (Part III – Pear Shape)

For Part III of Flattering Your Figure, a put2gether reader asked us to feature slimming styles for ladies with shapely curves, so our focus today is the pear shape. Our Pear friends tend to have great arms, shoulders and waists, paired with fullness through the hip and bottom areas. These gals have great curves that can be played up or toned up, based on comfortable level, because you should always feel absolutely comfortable in everything you wear.

For our Pears who want to accentuate their curves, there are a ton of options that will embrace your great assets. Remember to think “fitted” versus “tight” – fitted and tailored clothing will highlight your body’s natural beauty, while clothing that it tight will detract. Staples in your wardrobe should include pencil skirts, skinny pants and outfits that nip in at that great waist. Cocktail party? Go for a Herve Leger-style bandage dress – the style hugs your curves in all of the right ways.  This Herve Leger on Beyonce is a great example for Pears – the color blocking at the waist adds extra emphasis on one of your best features.

For our Pears who are looking for trimming techniques, you also have a tremendous number of options. For these gals, it’s all about attracting attention to your top. By showcasing your toned top-half through color, shape and pattern, you will keep the focus up by adding balance to your overall look. Wardrobe staples include cropped jackets, tops that complement your skintone and statement necklaces. I love this look by Banana Republic – an au courant collarless jacket, cropped in brilliant white, that sets the foundation for a great blouse and necklace.

Okay, gals, now let’s get into some style solutions!

Dress for Success. In addition to form-fitting dresses like the Herve Leger, Pears look fab in dresses and skirts with an A-line cut. Choose fabric that flows over your form (remember, tight ain’t right!). Avoid too much fabric through pleating or gathers at the waist – you will want to showcase your mighty midsection – so go for flat-front designs with great flow or full skirts. Pick solid colors with embellishment at the waist and neckline, or cinched in by a belt to add fashion flair. Here’s a fave – high scoop neck, a-line dress in a punchy blue, with a built-in belt that defines the waist – gorgeous!

Calvin Klein

And remember, every gal should get a wrap dress! Wrap dresses look especially great on our Pear friends with their smaller waists. Go for a great black wrap dress and glam it up with some great metallic baubles or beadwork around the neck.

You’re the Tops. Since the focus is on turning the eye upward, Pears can have great fun with all types and styles of tops. Select necklines that draw the eye up, so think boat, scoop, square or cowl neck. Cowl neck is a great choice because it also provides an interesting visual at the neckline. Think fun blouses with tie necks or great patterns. Pears can even wear what most ladies can’t – horizontal stripes! The stripes help balance your overall look, so this summer, how about a navy striped boatneck top paired with dark-wash jeans and orange leather wedges? Or if you are heading to the office, throw on a great black and white polka dot jacket, an oversized white beaded necklace and an A-line white skirt? Pears should definitely invest in a bevy of jackets – they can be dressed up or down and provide that visual cue you are looking for.

Down with Denim. Pears have some great jean options. Going curvy? Go for form-fitting skinny pants that show off what you got. Going for slim and trim? Get yourself a pair of dark-wash, boot-cut jeans. The dark color is so slimming while the boot cut helps balance your overall look for additional trimming. Also go for full-length, darker versions of your everyday pants – length also creates balance and the color offers you a great neutral from which you can add your tremendous tops.
